Putting the ghost fleets to rest

THE SCURRIED activities that resulted from Arc Ecology's release of the Maritime Administration's report on the potential pollution from the Suisun mothball fleet is like watching that great scene in the movie "Casablanca" when Claude Rains declares: "Gambling in Casablanca, I'm shocked!!" and then collects his winnings.

The condition of the mothball fleet has been well known for decades. So well known that there are congressional testimony and reports on the subject dating almost two decades.

The simple fact is that these mothball, or ghost fleets as they are sometimes called, shed toxic contamination into the nation's bays and rivers wherever they are.

Like blighted communities, sheets of paint peel off ships when they aren't cared for. Sea growth of the kind bearding these vessels doesn't just happen, nor do invasive species survive for decades within a bilge without negligence on the part of the agency responsible for maintenance.
