If not Army missiles, did Air Force missiles contaminate Deep Creek? John Langeler KXLY TV News 4 (Spokane, WA) July 27, 2007SPOKANE -- While a recently released Army Corps of Engineers report rejects the EPA’s belief that former Army missile sites aren’t the source of groundwater pollution, maybe the EPA wasn’t asking about the right missiles. Throughout the investigation into the contamination in the Deep Creek area west of Spokane, the EPA has focused its attention on an old surface-to-air missile battery known as Fairchild Nike 87, which was operated by the Army in the late 1950s through the mid-1960s. However, at no time during the investigation into groundwater contamination did either the EPA or the Army Corps of Engineers look into other missile sites in the area run by the Air Force, specifically several Atlas ICBM sites, one of which is located near Reardan. The Atlas-E missile sites, of which there are nine in the Inland Northwest, were operated between 1961 and 1965 by the 567th Strategic Missile Squadron based out of Fairchild Air Force Base. ...
