Hazardous soil dug from Doyle Park By BILL FINCH Mobile Press-Register (AL) August 31, 2007Federal officials said that some 5,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil -- nearly 200 dump truckloads -- are being dug out of Doyle Park, a city recreational area near Mobile Bay. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is overseeing work on the old military waste site, in the Rosedale neighborhood at the southern tip of the Brookley Field Industrial Complex. Corps officials said the work was undertaken primarily to slow the spread of hazardous chemicals through the area's underground water. A corps report about the site estimated that as much as 50 million gallons of underground water could be contaminated. The corps has determined that no one is currently using that groundwater as a drinking supply, though the contaminants are likely to end up in Mobile Bay. ...
