By Aaron Gouveia Cape Cod Times (MA) September 9, 2007CAMP EDWARDS - For the first time in a decade, soldiers at Camp Edwards are firing lead bullets. The bullets were banned in 1997 after they were considered a threat to the drinking water supply beneath the Upper Cape. The ban on lead was lifted in August, and yesterday a group of about 50 soldiers fired into a new bullet catching system at Tango Range. The bullet trap, called a STAPP system, is equipped with a self-sealing rubber membrane that allows the bullet in, then closes after a round passes through. The system stops the lead bullets from entering the ground and causing contamination thanks to a liner, layer of ground rubber and then the top cover. Col. Bill FitzPatrick, deputy director of the Massachusetts National Guard Environmental and Readiness Center, said yesterday's session at the firing range was the first since problems were discovered with the bullet catching system in early August. ...
