Navy working to augment base's buffer Meeting with neighbors over increase in flights BY KIRK MOORE Asbury Park Press (NJ) September 24, 2007LAKEHURST - The merger of New Jersey's biggest military bases and an influx of additional aircraft means air traffic around Lakehurst Naval Air Engineering Station will increase ten-fold, from 8,000 flights annually to 80,000 within a few years, according to Navy planners. In recent weeks, they've been on an informal campaign to meet with their civilian counterparts in surrounding communities, seeking a synchronized vision of how land around Navy Lakehurst should be used in the coming years, to minimize the impact of aircraft noise and potential conflicting uses. For the first time, the Navy is partnering with the state Green Acres program to obtain a conservation easement on the Jeffrey's Branch cranberry bogs, on the southern boundary of the base, to ensure that any future development is kept away from the fence, said Dennis Blazak, chief environmental engineer at the Navy base. ...
