DEQ denies waste permit for Mesa contractor By J. Craig Anderson East Valley Tribune (AZ) December 14, 2007 The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality will not allow a defense contractor to continue burning rocket propellant and other chemicals at an east Mesa site within a mile of hundreds of homes. Talley Defense Systems had requested a state hazardous waste permit that would have allowed it to burn up to 60,000 pounds a year of ammonium nitrate, ammonium perchlorate and other chemicals used in its products, which include rocket launchers, automobile air bags and air crew ejection seats. But DEQ Director Steve Owens said in a prepared statement the company has not needed to burn such materials lately and should not do so in the future. ...
