EPA issues draft permit for unexploded ordnance management By Emmanuel T. Erediano Marianas Variety (CNMI) December 14, 2007 THE U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has prepared a draft permit or remedial action plan allowing the CNMI [Commonwealth of the Northern Marianaa Islands] to handle unexploded ordnance, or UXO. The Department of Public Safety applied for a remedial action plan which will serve as “an appropriate permit for storage and treatment of UXOs or munitions and explosive concerns.” The Northern Marianas was the scene of some of the Pacific’s bloodiest World War II battles. Because UXOs pose a serious threat to public health and environment, the CNMI has employed trained experts to discover, store and detonate the ordnance. UXOs are detonated at a designated area in Marpi Point and is conducted by the Department of Public Safety and a U.S. Navy explosive and ordnance disposal unit. ...
