Runkle Canyon's safe, says developer First of two tests shows acceptable radiation levels By Anna Bakalis Ventura County Star December 21, 2007 The results of a soil test in Runkle Canyon have come back clean, without worry of health hazards, because only low levels of strontium 90 were found, according to the developer that hopes to build on the site south of Simi Valley. "It shows the property is safe for residential development," said Keith Jajko, Runkle Canyon LLC spokesman. Runkle Canyon abuts the former Santa Susana Field Laboratory, where a 1959 nuclear reactor meltdown and subsequent contamination are being linked to hundreds of cancer cases in the area, a recent independent study said. SR-90 is a radioactive isotope that has been linked to certain cancers and a cause for worry among residents and city officials, who pushed for the additional soil testing. Results from testing the site four years ago had shown much higher levels of SR-90. ...
