Army working to accelerate CAAP cleanup By Tracy Overstreet Grand Island Independent (NE) January 29, 2008 The Army has been injecting soybean oil and a molasses-based mixture into groundwater to speed up the removal of explosives residue at the former Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant west of Grand Island. "It's intended to accelerate cleanup by at least 10 years," said Al Kam of Omaha, the Army Corps of Engineers' project manager. That's key because the Army is spending about $1 million a year on the monitoring of contaminant levels and on operating a pump-and-treat groundwater facility on the former plant site. ...
