Army seeks Passage Key munitions info By SYLVIA LIM Bradenton Herald (FL) February 2, 2008 At one time, bombs probably outnumbered birds at Passage Key. During World War II, the tiny island north of Anna Maria was used by the U.S. military as an air-to-ground gunnery range. As part of a routine nationwide effort to inspect such sites, a team from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers came to Manatee County last July to see if there were leftover munitions or ordnance that could be harmful. Between 1943 and 1945, Passage Key, a national wildlife refuge, was used by the Headquarters 3rd Fighter Command as a ground strafing and dive bombing range, according to a corps report released in December. ...
