Army in process of examining local bombing ranges By Stella Davis Carlsbad Current Argus(NM) Feburary 4, 2008 CARLSBAD - Between 1943 and 1945, U.S. military bombers flew over Eddy County, dropping bombs over designated precision practice bombing ranges The bombs, some live ones and some black powder filled concrete bombs, landed on sites just outside the perimeters of the Army Air Force Base, known today as the Carlsbad Municipal Airport. The air base was established to train bombardiers and navigators in precision bombing. The men later flew missions over Europe during World War II. Now, more than 60 years later, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has identified at least 26 bombing range sites in Eddy County that will be reviewed for safety by the U.S. Department of Defense. ...
