Newcomers aid field lab cleanup with discoveries By Teresa Rochester Ventura County Star (CA) February 10, 2008 Armed with cameras and curiosity, three people trudged through Sage Ranch Park last summer. Searching for drainage from a rocket engine and nuclear test site next door, they stumbled upon a creek bed filled with glassy, lightweight foamlike material. Venturing deeper into the park south of Simi Valley, the trio — Christina Walsh, William Preston Bowling and John Luker — found debris from the Santa Susana Field Laboratory's defunct shooting range. Their discovery of contamination with cancer-causing pollutants triggered a state order for the facility's owner to clean up the debris in the park. Walsh, Bowling and Luker are part of new wave of activists joining the fight for accountability and proper cleanup at the 2,850-acre test site commonly known as Rocketdyne, atop a hill straddling the Ventura-Los Angeles county line. ...
