Army training site update: Cleanup focus was three spots

MARION - The U.S. Army Environmental Command and U.S. Army Reserve 88th 
Regional Readiness Command continue to investigate environmental 
concerns on an Army Reserve training property on Harding Highway East.

KEMRON Environmental Services, the Army's contractor, treated and 
transported 400 cubic yards of soil contaminated with hazardous 
material, and removed 14,376 cubic yards of soil from the Marion Local 
Training Area, adjacent the southern edge of the former Marion Engineer 
Depot. The Army contractor completed the removal from the Army Reserve's 
three primary areas of concern in mid-October, said Maj. Annmarie 
Daneker, Army Reserve spokeswoman.

The Army is doing the cleanup under the federal Comprehensive 
Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act, or CERCLA, after 
evaluation of the 127-acre site revealed elevated levels of 
contaminants. One of the sites is at the southwest corner of the Army 
Reserve property adjacent the southern edge of the Marion Industrial 
Center property on Harding Highway East (Ohio 309) and the other two are 
at the northeast corner of the Army Reserve land.
