CITY OF TONAWANDA: Officials address noise, dust

City and Town of Tonawanda officials met for more than two hours Friday 
to discuss quality of life issues related to the toxic town landfill 
that borders homes on Hackett Drive in the city.

A dry 2007 summer contributed to an annoying amount of dust and debris 
hovering over Hackett while EnSol - the company hired by the town to cap 
the landfill - did construction work on the site. It created a furor 
among some city residents, who complained of layers of dust collecting 
on their pools and said they had to keep their windows closed to prevent 
the dust from migrating into their homes.

The FUSRAP designated portion of the landfill is believed to be 
contaminated with uranium ore that was processed in the 1940s as part of 
the Manhattan Project, the government's secret effort to build the 
country's first nuclear weapon. It has been the focus of numerous 
disagreements between the state and the federal government, with each 
saying it's the other agency's responsibility to remediate the site.
