US inaction on Clark, Subic toxic wastes scored By Tonette Orejas The Inquirer (Philippines) February 24, 2008 MABALACAT, Pampanga —Members of the US-based Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) have expressed outrage over the American government's continued use of the Philippines as a site for military exercises even as it failed to clean up contaminated areas in its two former bases in the country. CPT delegates saw what they called "continuing military contamination" as they visited the former Clark Air Base and Subic Naval Base on the first week of the Balikatan (Shoulder-to-Shoulder) in Mindanao, the biggest of 30 or so exercises that resumed in 1999 under the Philippines-US Visiting Forces Agreement. Clark in Pampanga and Tarlac, and Subic in Bataan and Zambales have since been converted by the Philippine government into economic free ports after the Philippine Senate ordered the closure of the military facilities in 1991. ...
