Supreme Court rejects appeal of lab landfill decision

SANTA FE - The state Supreme Court, in a one-sentence ruling, denied an 
appeal by an environmental group that sought to overturn a state 
Environment secretary decision letting Sandia National Laboratories 
cover a toxic waste dump with dirt rather than dig it up.

The state Court of Appeals, in a decision in December, affirmed 
Environment Secretary Ron Curry's decision in 2005 not to require 
excavation of the landfill at the federal lab on Kirtland Air Force Base 
south of Albuquerque's airport.

The lab dumped waste containing radioactive materials and hazardous 
chemicals between 1959 and 1988.
