When it was recently announced that developer Westcor had plans for land southeast of the base for large-scale residential and commercial development, questions arose about encroachment. These came from the media and citizenry alike. Would the base be dealing with the same overflight issues from the southeast that have been so problematic from the northwest? Our answer to the media was that because of new land-use laws in place and the vigorous dialogue with the community, this situation to the southeast would not develop the same way, and these problems would be alleviated. The city and the county seemed to be taking steps to ensure this was, in fact, the case. Dissenting voices, however, were not interested in anything beyond getting flights over Midtown to cease. Justifications and the proposed solutions seemed unrealistic. ...
