Riverbank considers 'green' makeover for Army ammo property By EVE HIGHTOWER Modesto Bee (CA) February 27, 2008 RIVERBANK -- From Superfund to super green, city officials are looking to flip the Riverbank Army Ammunition Plant's image. The U.S. Army, which began making munitions there 56 years ago, has been working toward cleaning up contamination at the 173-acre site at Claus and Claribel roads so it can sell it by 2011. It's unknown who will take over the park. The Army could donate it to the city or sell it to a private company. It could divide the park into pieces and sell them as it removes contamination. Because the industrial park always has been federally owned, this is the city's first chance to influence how the land is used. City officials have said they intend to keep it zoned industrial. ...
