Wal-Mart encroachment endangers Travis base

Hello, Wal-Mart; goodbye, Travis. Those are four terrible sounding words 
- especially to those of us who served honorably in the service of our 
great country and who chose to retire in an area that offered a great 
military installation, Travis Air Force Base; a fine health care 
provider, David Grant Medical Center; and a base exchange and commissary.

These are the most important things a military retiree looks for when 
coming to the end of his or her career. At least they were in my case, 
and I'm sure that many others felt the same way. Also, there were 
employment opportunities for those of us who would like to go back into 
the work force.

In the early 1990s, trouble started. Developers took a look at our fine 
community and decided a great opportunity existed here for them to get 
rich by constructing homes and businesses. But the location of these 
sites spelled encroachment. That meant that these projects, if allowed 
to be constructed, posed a serious threat to the operations and missions 
of Travis Air Force Base. ...
