Fishermen, birdwatchers fear launch pad plan

Public hearing set for today in New Smyrna

Talk around the bait shops and boat ramps is growing worrisome, as 
fishing guides fear losing prime fishing grounds -- their economic 
engine -- to a launch pad for commercial rockets.

"Our theme park is the Mosquito Lagoon," said charter boat Capt. Mark 
Drown, 30, of Titusville, who also works at Lelle's Bait & Tackle.

Parts of the lagoon and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge 
close four days before each space shuttle launch. With NASA proposing 
two commercial rocket launch sites that might cause more closures, 
charter captains feel threatened.
