Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] MUNITION - Kaho'olawe ordnance disposal |
News Release Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission February 29, 2008 Navy to access Kaho'olawe for Ordnance Disposal The Kaho'olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) has authorized a US Navy explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team access to the Island of Kaho'olawe to dispose of newly discovered, previously undetected ordnance at select locations on the island. The EOD mission will take place between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. daily between Tuesday, March 4 and Friday, March 7. The KIRC has also requested "restricted airspace" to be in effect for the Kaho'olawe Reserve during these EOD operations. All personnel on Kaho'olawe not involved with the EOD demolition operations will be directed to remain in designated safe areas until EOD operations have been completed. Select KIRC staff, designated by Interim Executive Director Michele McLean, shall serve as official escorts and guides for the Navy team, advising them of significant, actively managed and protected natural, cultural and historic areas. The Navy will coordinate its operations daily with KIRC personnel on the island via radio communications to Kaho'olawe Reserve Operations Control - "KIRC Base" - to ensure that all non-EOD persons on-island and/or within Reserve waters are within designated safe areas. Kaho'olawe Reserve Operations Control will coordinate notification of the US Coast Guard, Flight Service Station - Honolulu; Honolulu Air Route Traffic Control Center/Radar Approach Facility (CERAP); Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Chair Laura Thielen; DLNR's Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement (DOCARE); and, other relevant parties or agencies. A Procedural Agreement between the US Navy and the KIRC provides for the Navy to dispose of newly discovered, previously undetected ordnance within the Reserve.
