Plan for combat-training site spurs environmental concerns

GROVELAND - A Tampa-based company is leasing hundreds of acres of 
wetlands and forests in the Green Swamp to build a training facility for 
soldiers and security contractors headed for combat areas such as 
Afghanistan and Iraq.

Today, the private land near the Polk County line and east of State Road 
33 is filled with grazing cows, water moccasins, deer, bobcats and scrub 
pines. Sandy roads crisscross the property, which covers more than 500 
acres.

But when the state-of-the-art facility -- proposed by Aguieus-HTS of 
Tampa -- is completed, company officials say, it will feature landing 
pads for military helicopters, shooting ranges, a mock village, a 
racetrack and housing for clients.
