Cop range gets the lead out Trooper shooting site has 'green' reopening By TERRI SANGINITI Wilmington News Journal (DE) March 4, 2008 Four years after being closed by lead contamination that was showing up in the blood of state troopers, the Delaware State Police firing range north of Smyrna was reopened Monday. But even with $2.9 million spent to eliminate problems with air handling systems, there won't be any lead flying around in the building. The range has gone "green." Troopers and police officers from throughout the state who use the facility will be firing reduced-hazard ammunition, made with non-toxic ingredients that won't emit lead fumes. Troopers engage in qualifying proficiency shoots three times a year. The range was closed in March 2004 because of high levels of lead, copper, zinc and arsenic in the air. Blood tests from several officers using the facility and working there showed elevated levels of lead. ...
