Edison arsenal cleanup advancing By TOM CAIAZZA New Brunswick Home News Tribune (NJ) March 7, 2008 EDISON — Armed with highly advanced metal detectors and global positioning systems the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has made significant advances in locating and removing outmoded munitions on the former Raritan Arsenal site. The site, vacated by the army in 1963, has undergone cleanup efforts for the better part of 20 years and Jim Moore, project manager for the Army Corps made his annual presentation to the township's Restoration Advisory Board, describing the new cleanup process. The Army opened the site in 1917 and stored ammunition and other ordnance that was left on the site and in the soil when the army pulled out in 1963. The Army stored World War I and World War II vintage explosives on the site and the vast majority of the 264 ordnance the corps has pulled from the ground were track baton-sized booster adaptors, metal scrap and Mark 2 type pineapple sized grenades, most of which no longer contain active explosives, Moore said. ...
