New strategy pushed for arsenal
Schumer, McNulty lead charge to win Army's OK to convert facility into 
technology business park

WATERVLIET -- Members of New York's congressional delegation will call 
on the Army today to allow Watervliet Arsenal to be developed into a 
technology business park -- a plan that could create 1,500 jobs on the site.

The arsenal, established in 1813, is the Army's only volume manufacturer 
of large-caliber cannon, including guns for its main battlefield tank, 
the M1A1 Abrams.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and U.S. Rep. Michael McNulty, 
D-Green Island, will ask the Army to allow for more high-tech 
development of the site during an afternoon event in Watervliet.

Neither the arsenal nor the Army immediately responded to requests for 
comment.

The Army employs roughly 800 people at the arsenal, including about 250 
employees of Benet Laboratories, an Army research and development unit.
