ARCO's $27.5M nuke deal approved

Attorneys for about 250 people who claim they were harmed by radioactive 
releases from a former nuclear fuels plants in the Apollo area accepted 
a $27.5 million settlement Tuesday from one company in federal court.

U.S. District Judge Donetta Ambrose approved the settlement with one of 
the case's two defendants, the Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO).

Litigation is pending against the other defendant, Babcock & Wilcox Co.

The operations in Apollo and Parks Township were started by the Nuclear 
Materials and Equipment Corporation (NUMEC). Those operations were 
related to nuclear fuels processing, mostly for the U.S. militar
