FEMA Nixes Fire Cleanup Aid

Bad news marked the visit Thursday by Rep. John Boozman, R-Rogers, to 
the fire site at Chaffee Crossing.

A petition to have the site declared a federal disaster area was denied 
by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Ivy Owen, Fort Chaffee 
Redevelopment Authority executive director.

Boozman and his staff toured the site where a Jan. 29 fire burned more 
than 100 acres and destroyed more than 150 World War II-era buildings. 
Also present were Jerry Roberts and Tonya Roberts of the Sebastian 
County Department of Emergency Management and Dr. Jerry Stewart, FCRA 
chairman.

Owen said he understands county and FCRA officials have 30 days to 
appeal FEMA’s decision, and he asked for Boozman’s help in planning the 
appeal.
