Fort proposal needs tweaking

The preliminary redevelopment plan for the Fort Monmouth property offers 
many of the mixed uses — housing, businesses and recreation — the region 
needs. But its housing proposals should be scaled back and more clearly 
defined and its commercial components should be expanded, with a sharp 
focus on job creation.

The plan was drawn up by consultants to the Fort Monmouth Economic 
Revitalization Authority, the agency created to develop uses for the 
1,100-acre fort property. Challenges to the Base Realignment and Closure 
commission decision to close the fort and transfer its mission to the 
Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland are pending in federal court, and 
two federal investigations into the process that led to the decision are 
under way. But the redevelopment plan must proceed in the event attempts 
to reverse the decision to shutter the fort fail.
