News from New York Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo


STATEMENT BY ATTORNEY GENERAL CUOMO REGARDING THE ILLEGAL ATTEMPT TO 
DISSOLVE THE LAKE ONTARIO ORDNANCE WORKS RESTORATION ADVISORY BOARD:

"Today, I sent a letter to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers demanding it 
halt its illegal and misguided attempt to dissolve the citizens group 
overseeing the cleanup of the Lake Ontario Ordnance Works (LOOW).  This 
citizens group, officially known as the Restoration Advisory Board 
(RAB), was established to watchdog the cleanup of the 7,500-acre nuclear 
waste storage site located in the communities of Lewiston and Porter. 
The RAB has provided a critical public service giving the community a 
voice in addressing environmental and public health concerns related to 
the presence of highly radioactive nuclear waste in its midst. The Corps 
is now attempting to dissolve and deny the existence of this group, 
effectively silencing the community. The Corps' actions are not only 
inadvisable, they also violate federal law.   I call on the Corps to 
immediately abandon its efforts to dissolve and silence the community."
