Landing strip rules fuel fire at meeting By TIA MITCHELL, Florida Times-Union April 29, 2008 Jacksonville city leaders have apologized repeatedly for not doing enough to involve and inform residents living near Whitehouse Field about a city ordinance that restricts new construction around the landing strip. But their apologies, and a proposed solution, weren't enough to placate angry home-owners Monday night during a meeting at Trinity Baptist Church. For nearly three hours, the mayor and the City Council were lambasted for the legislation and for attempting to revise it instead of pushing forward with a repeal. The meeting - about 600 residents signed in and perhaps 400 more also were in attendance - was laced with shouting and angry words from Westside property owners who said the restrictions have lowered the value of their property. And they blamed a city government they said is self-serving, untrustworthy and doesn't listen to residents' concerns. The ordinance, passed in March 2007, updated existing city law and addressed state requirements that local governments prevent encroachment near military installations. The Navy uses the 2,500-acre Whitehouse Field to simulate takeoffs and landings on an aircraft carrier deck. ...
