Decades later, decades to go, military cleans up hazards By DINAH PULVER Daytona Beach News-Journal (FL) May 18, 2008In 1942, Glenn Miller sang about his gal in Kalamazoo, Walt Disney's "Bambi" played in theaters and the United States went to war. The country acted quickly after the December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, ramping up training and defense and building bases nationwide, including Volusia and Flagler counties. Pilots at the DeLand Naval Air Station, where more than 125 planes sat on the tarmac, practiced strafing and dive-bombing at local lakes dubbed "Tokyo" and "Yokohama." Streets at the Naval Air Station in Daytona Beach were named for major war events in the Pacific, including Pearl Harbor and Guadalcanal. Then, almost as soon as the war ended in 1946, many bases were shut down, including the two local stations. The land was deeded to former owners or other government agencies. Today, long after obvious signs of the bases vanished, trappings of war remain. Many sites still hold old munitions, fuel tanks or other hazards. ...
