Middletown Residents Say Proposed Army Base Site Isn't Suitable By JOSH KOVNER Hartford Courant (CT) July 17, 2008 MIDDLETOWN —An overflow crowd of Westfield residents who oppose a regional Army training base in their neighborhood found a receptive audience among common council members Wednesday, but comments from Army officials indicated they have a battle on their hands. Todd Hornback, a spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers in Louisville, Ky., said in a telephone interview that the agency knows of the concerns about traffic, flooding and a possible economic burden from the training base slated for Middle Street and Boardman Lane, near the Cromwell border. He said the Corps would do everything it could to minimize the impact of the base on the neighborhood. The base would be a 35-acre, 273,000-square-foot complex on an 88-acre site. The base would employ 150 people and host up to 800 citizen soldiers on weekends. It would replace seven Army Reserve and Connecticut National Guard facilities that are closing. ...
