CAAP cleanup reducing groundwater contamination By Tracy Overstreet The Grand Island Independent (NE) July 17, 2008 GRAND ISLAND -The amount of explosives residue in the groundwater at the former Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant (CAAP) is down more than 40 percent from a year ago. Molasses, soybean oil and whey are taking their toll on the residue at the defunct plant west of Grand Island. The trio has been injected into groundwater with hot pockets of RDX and TNT contamination -- leftovers from the bomb-making years of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s at CAAP. The groundwater was under former Load Lines 4 and 5 and the pistol range. "So far, the RDX and TNT have been adhering to those," said Mary Wellensiek, contracting officer for CAAP. "We were hoping for a 25-percent decrease and it's showing a lot more than 25 percent." ...
