Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] "Agencies Battle Over Contaminated Land" |
Today I was a panelist of WAMU radio's (DC) Kojo Nnamdi show for the
following discussion:
"Agencies Battle Over Contaminated Land"The Pentagon and the Environmental Protection Agency are clashing, and Maryland's Fort Meade and Fort Detrick are near the center of the dispute. So who trumps whom when federal agencies fight? And why should you care? Kojo looks behind the headlines to find out what's going on, and whether the public should be concerned about the clean-up of contaminated military sites." One can listen to the program on line at http://wamu.org/programs/kn/08/07/24.php#21264. Unfortunately, none of the guests was informed about the local data from the sites that form the heart of the controversy, and I felt the other guests were not fully conversant with federal facilities cleanup regulation. At the end of the segment, I asked for time to respond to one of the guests about historical relations between the Defense Department and EPA, but we were out of time. I intended to mention the Federal Facilities Environmental Restoration Dialogue Committee, which met during the Bush, Sr. and Clinton administrations. Through discussions among representatives of a diverse range of constituencies, we (FFERDC) were able to reduce conflict between the agencies and move cleanup forward. It's my view that current disputes could be resolved by bringing FFERDC back together, particularly under the guidance of a new administration.
