Submarine leaks radiation: Navy says risk minimal; Guam tests due

Government of Guam officials yesterday attempted to allay the fears of 
islanders after the discovery of possible radioactive contamination to 
Guam waters.

Gov. Felix P. Camacho yesterday held a press conference to address 
reports of a valve leak aboard the USS Houston, a fast attack nuclear 
powered submarine home-ported on Guam.

The leak was discovered July 24, while the vessel was dry-docked in 
Honolulu. According to a news release from Guam Delegate Madeleine 
Bordallo, the leak could have gone undetected for more than five months.
