Fuses short over Wellers Bay by Ray Yurkowski Brighton Independent (ONT) August 14, 2008For years, it's been a quiet, sandy refuge for local nature lovers willing to disregard the danger beneath their feet. "It's all about a right to our heritage," says Friends of Wellers Bay chair, Wayne Wilson at their annual meeting held last weekend at Consecon. The narrow strip of sand protruding from the waters of Lake Ontario was home to the former Consecon Air Weapons Range and consists of several islands and connecting sand spits between Consecon and Brighton. The military operated the air weapons range from 1939 to 1953 training thousands of pilots as bombs, rockets and explosive projectiles were directed at targets in the area. The Department of National Defence (DND) is advising the public to stay out saying the area still contains enough unexploded Second World War artillery to devastate an entire city block. ...
