Laughlin updates community on environmental cleanup sites By Stacy S. Jensen Del Rio Live! (TX) August 15, 2008Chemical spills and work practices at Laughlin Air Force Base decades ago, allowing chemicals to escape as runoff into the soil and groundwater, continue to be monitored today. Of 24 sites identified on base, six remain open and are in the process of being closed officials said at the Restoration Advisory Board (RAB) meeting Tuesday. Col. David Ellis, vice commander, 47th Flying Training Wing, and RAB co-chairman, said the restoration efforts are about correcting past waste disposal practices and being good neighbors. The meeting, he said, Tuesday (Aug. 11), is about full disclosure to the public with respect to Laughlin and its environmental activities. "It's a team effort to make sure we keep Del Rio and Val Verde County clean," Ellis said. Humberto Aguirre, RAB's community co-chairman, and Ellis thanked those attending the public meeting at Hampton Inn & Suites. Aguirre said he became involved in environmental issues following a visit to a hospital near the Rio Grande where he found children sick from the water. Aguirre said Laughlin is the cleanest base in the United States. ...
