Military to speed up site cleanup 7-year outline could be picked over 12-year plan By David Wren Myrtle Beach Sun News (SC) September 17, 2008The military likely will spend a little more money to shave five years off the projected cleanup time for groundwater contamination at a site on and near the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, according to a plan outlined Tuesday for the facility's Restoration Advisory Board. That news comes less than two months after some residents complained during a public hearing that the military was putting finances ahead of health concerns at the site, known as the Old Entomology Shop. The military has proposed two cleanup plans for the area, which sits near the border of the base along Emory Road. In July, the military said it probably would proceed with a 12-year plan costing $723,000. An alternate plan would take seven years and cost $1.1 million. ...
