WWII ordnance probed at dump By MIKE GELLATLY Aiken Standard (SC) September 22, 2008A World War II ammunition dump and shooting range in Aiken County has been examined by an independent contractor to assess whether any unexploded ordnance was a danger to the community. The former Aiken Army Airfield, which sits on the current site of the Aiken Municipal Airport, was examined for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. ...The site was activated in June 1943 for the training of technical reconnaissance units.
