Military inspection targets old bombing site in Davie Military checks out WW II training area to verify its safety By Macollvie Jean-François South Florida Sun-Sentinel (CA) October 7, 2008 DAVIEBefore southwestern Broward County turned into suburbs with all the trappings of development, World War II Navy aviators flew overhead, practicing on targets before going off to drop bombs on the enemy. More than 60 years later, the military is once again eyeing former training sites around the county, to ensure all potentially harmful remnants of the weapons are buried or gone. These days, the Army Corps of Engineers is inspecting the former Stirling Bomb Target near Vista View Park, just north of Griffin Road and west of Southwest 142nd Street. Officials ran an ad asking residents to call with information about any weapon fragments they have found. "There's nothing there we could find," project manager Charles Fales said last month. "Were there to be any of them there — and again, we didn't find any - they might potentially hurt somebody." ...
