Alameda delves into base contamination concerns By Michele Ellson San Jose Mercury News (CA) October 6, 8008City officials are girding for fresh clashes over the cleanup of toxic contaminants at the former Alameda Naval Air Station. One is over the cleanup of radioactive dirt and other potential contaminants at the site of a former landfill in the northwest corner of the shuttered Navy base. The second concerns possible contaminants left behind at the North Housing Parcel — land which could be used for housing and services for homeless people. "Contaminated land should not be passed to any future nonprofit. The Navy should have the liability for any property they contaminated," Councilman Frank Matarrese, acting as a member of the Alameda Reuse and Redevelopment Authority board, said at a meeting the board held Wednesday. Matarrese said the city could sue the Navy to try to get it to foot any additional North Housing Parcel cleanup bill. ...
