YOUNGSTOWN: No trust exists over LOOW sites By Rick Ahrens Niagara Gazette (NY) October 14, 2008YOUNGSTOWN - A lack of trust exists between the government, environmental investigators and the communities of Lewiston and Porter concerning the management and cleanup of the former Lake Ontario Ordinance Works site, experts said Tuesday. A meeting discussing the release of a three-year study that analyzed potential gaps in data collected from decades of environmental investigations and chemical analysis conducted on the 7,500-acre industrial complex was held Tuesday at the Lewiston Senior Center. "We started this project because people in the community felt they had concerns about the site that weren't being addressed," said Daniel Stapleton, public health director for the Niagara County Department of Health. The study recommended providing more government funding to federal agencies responsible for reporting information about the cleanup and monitoring of contaminated former government sites. Past funding shortages have delayed the data reporting by, in some cases, several years. ...
