Multiple clean-ups proceed By Don Eriksson Nashoba Publishing October 17. 2008DEVENS -- When one listens to Restoration Advisory Board meetings, information concerning the remaining three areas of Devens under remediation is often lost among the acronyms Army environmentalists use. However, it seems progress is being made.There has been real movement on the remaining Devens clean-up efforts -- the study of groundwater near Nonocaious Brook (West Main Street, Ayer), Plow Shop Pond's Red Cove, the cap atop the Shepley's Hill Superfund site, and the cleansing of groundwater under the former Moore Army Airfield. According to Lynn Welsh of the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), monitoring well triplets are being added behind 131 and 139 West Main Street and north of the brook close to the wastewater treatment plant in an ongoing check for contamination. Welsh said some arsenic has been found 40 feet down, but nothing so far on the north side of the brook. One more well will be placed on the north side, she said, and more field work is planned to sample flows that were interrupted by this summer's heavy rains. ...
