Base cleanup plan revised

FALMOUTH - The Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment is changing the way it will clean up six groundwater plumes contaminated with solvents and fuel at the Massachusetts Military Reservation.

Initially, the Air Force agreed to extract and treat groundwater contaminated with any amount of tetrachloroethylene, trichloroethylene and ethylene dibromide.

With the change announced yesterday, the Air Force will now allow the leading edges of the plumes in Hatchville, with concentrations within safe drinking water standards, to disperse naturally, a spokesman for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said.

"Previously, we said the Air Force had to get every drop of contamination out," EPA spokesman Jim Murphy said.
