There, on a narrow waterfront lot in Portsmouth that juts into the river like a long tongue, workers for more than 60 years coated wood pilings and poles with tar like creosote and other chemical preservatives. ...Since 1990, the 48-acre property has been on the national list of Superfund cleanup sites.
