Less money this year for Whiting land

Santa Rosa gets smaller amount for preserving area around base

Santa Rosa County will receive only $200,000 to purchase land around 
Whiting Field Naval Air Station in 2009, the smallest amount in seven 
years with the exception of 2008, when it received no funds.

More than $2.3 million has been received from the state's Defense 
Initiative Fund that prevents private encroachment to military sites. 
Nearly 600 acres around the base north of Milton have been purchased.

The smaller 2009 allocation is due to the lagging economy and resulting 
strain on state funds, said Cindy Anderson, executive director of TEAM 
Santa Rosa, the county's economic development arm.
