Lenny! I saw a presentation given by the Corps on Surf City. During beach re-nourishment commercial dredgers do not use fine screens at the intake and out-take pipeline that dredge the sand up from the bottom of the Atlantic and brings the sand forward. Unfortunately up until the mid 90's the military was allowed to do off shore dumping of munitions. Since the Corps became involved in cleaning up the disaster that was caused at Surf City they mandate these screens on all of their equipment. Citizens should be very concerned with beach re-nourishment done by commercial contractors who do not adhere to this guidance. The homes at Surf City are extremely expensive and extremely close to the shore line. Living in Florida I continue to wonder why similar communities allow condos and million dollar homes to ruin our beach habitat and use Taxpayers money to re-nourish their beaches every two years. Wasting more taxpayers money on suing the corps seems more than frivolous to me. CATHERINE J. The Surfrider Foundation will be in federal court Thursday arguing for a preliminary injunction to stop replenishment on Long Branch beaches for fear of contaminated sand being pumped in off the coast. The Surfrider Foundation filed a lawsuit a few weeks ago citing concerns that sand the corps will pump in from a site several miles off Sea Bright could be contaminated. More than 1,200 World War I-era military munitions were pumped ashore during the Surf City beach replenishment project. A cleanup of the beaches will cost $17 million, the corps has said. The Surfrider Foundation is seeking a full battery of testing before the material is placed on the beach. If the tests show any contamination, the chapter wants the Army Corps to choose a different borrow area and thoroughly test there as well. ...
