Land use in Navy's sights

PANAMA CITY - Navy and local officials are meeting this week with a goal 
of balancing county development with protecting military resources.

"Anybody interested in what happens around the Navy base" should attend, 
said Tom Neubauer, president of the Bay Defense Alliance. "The intent is 
to identify issues and resolve them long before we have those kinds of 
problems."

In November 2006, the secretary of the Navy chose Naval Support 
Activity-Panama City to participate in the Department of Defense-backed 
Joint Land Use Study. With NSA-PC making extensive use of underwater 
ranges in St. Andrew Bay, increased population and ensuing development 
might pose some risks for the integrity of those ranges. The study's aim 
is to resolve those issues in a satisfactory manner for both parties.
