Many at meeting protest the new Presidio plan Rachel Gordon San Francisco Chronicle December 10, 2008A plan to scale back a contemporary art museum and a lodge proposed for the historic Main Post of the Presidio did little to appease critics who packed a public meeting Tuesday night to object to the development. "This is not an appropriate use of the Main Post," said Whitney Hall, who served as commandant of the Presidio, the former U.S. Army base, from 1979 to 1982 and is past president of the Presidio Historical Association. Hall is affiliated with a coalition of neighborhood, environmental and preservationist groups opposed to a proposal by Gap founder Donald Fisher and his wife, Doris, to build a museum for their vast collection of 20th and 21st century art in the heart of the Presidio, which is now a national park. ...
