Thanks to a tactical retreat this month by Gap founder Don Fisher, there's now a chance to craft a large art museum that deserves to reside within San Francisco's historic Presidio.

But as we warily await Fisher's next proposal for the 1,491-acre national park, it's vital to take stock of the larger landscape - a nuanced tapestry that grows richer by the month.

Lost in the debate over the 100,000-square-foot box of white concrete and glass was the steady procession of smaller projects, completed without commotion or crowds. Trees were planted. Buildings were restored. An enigmatic spike of bundled cedar trunks jabbed 90 feet into the sky.
